About Canton, GA
Canton is a city in and the county seat of Cherokee County, Georgia. With about 28,000 residents, Canton offers the best of both worlds: a small-town atmosphere but with big-city amenities nearby. Canton is a charming suburb, and it feels less intimidating getting around than it might feel in Atlanta. Canton is 40 miles north of downtown Atlanta via I-575 and I-75.
My husband, Chris, and I moved to nearby North Fulton County in 1996 with the goal of starting a family. As time passed, we developed a profound familiarity with the nearby regions, including the neighboring Canton situated in Cherokee County. The opportunity to actively engage with and be a part of the community is a genuine blessing we hold close. It’s difficult for us to envision raising our family or operating our business in any other location.
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the site where Canton would be founded lies in the heart of the original Cherokee Nation. During the first 100 years of Georgia’s history, Northwest Georgia was generally considered “Indian Country” and was bypassed by settlers going West. Following the Georgia Gold Rush in 1829, European-Americans began to move into the area north of Carrollton and west of the Chattahoochee River and named it Cherokee.
The new settlers chose a site for a permanent county seat and courthouse in 1833, naming it “Etowah.” The name was changed to “Cherokee Courthouse” in 1833. In 1834 it was changed to “Canton,” after the Chinese city of Guangzhou, which was then known in English as Canton. The name was chosen because a group of citizens had dreams of making the Georgia town a center of the silk industry, which was concentrated in China at the time. Though Canton never became a significant silk center, it did become a successful manufacturing community.
Ruff House Dog Resort stands out as an exceptional asset in this area. Our offerings extend beyond comprehensive dog training services for the residents of Canton; we also provide conveniences such as dog boarding, daycare, and grooming. It’s with great pride that we announce our receipt of the esteemed Best of North Atlanta award from Appen Media for three successive years, underscoring the commitment and caliber of our endeavors.
